Description
Chromic Catgut Absorbable suture is a sterile monofilament suture composed of
strands of purified collagen (twisted together), taken from bovine intestines. Chromic Suture undergoes a ribbon stage chromicisation and is treated with glycerine. It is treated with chromic salt solutions and offers a longer stitch hold time and larger resistance to adsorption compared to Catgut Plain. Where there is an increased level of proteolytic enzymes present, as in the secretions exhibited in the stomach, cervix and vagina, Catgut sutures are absorbed more rapidly.
Chromic sutures are packed in tubing fluid and are available undyed.
Chromic Catgut sutures should not be used where long suture support is necessary
WARNINGS
Do not resterilize. Discard open, unused sutures. Prolonged contact of this or
any other suture with salt solutions, such as those found in the urinary of biliary tracts, may result in calculus formation. Users should be familiar with surgical procedures and techniques involving absorbable sutures before
employing the absorbable Chromic Catgut suture for wound closure as risk of wound dehiscence may vary with the site of application and the suture material used. As an absorbable suture, Chromic catgut may act transiently as a foreign body. Acceptable surgical practice should be followed for the management of contaminated or infected wounds.
PRECAUTIONS
In handling this or any other suture meterial, care should be taken to avoid damage from handling. Avoid crushing or crimping damage due to application of surgical instruments such as forceps or needle holders. The user should
have sufficient knowledge and be familiar with absorbable surgical sutures
and the particular decreasing tensile strength. Chromic Catgut sutures are not suitable for elderly or debilitated patients or patients with retarded wound healing. Tissue with poor blood circulation may reject this suture material due to the deleyed absorption.
INDICATIONS
Chromic Sutures are indicated for use in general surgery. They are suitable for use in soft tissue and for ligation, including use in ophthalmic procedures, but
not for cardiovascular and neurological tissues.
ACTIONS
Chromic Catgut sutures procedures minimum acute tissue reactions followed.
They have a high initial tensile strength, which is retained for up to 28 days, after which absorption by enzymatic digestive process dissolves the surgical gut.
The process of digestion is complete by 90days.
REACTIONS
SIight inflammatory tissue reactions may occur initially in the environment of the
suture material. Prolonged contract of any suture with salt solutions, such as those in the urinary or biliary tracts, may cause calculus formation. The use of this suture in contraindicated in patients with known sensitivities or allergies to collagen or chromium, as gut is a collagen-based material, and chromic gut is treated with chromic salt solution.
